When all the conditions are just right it’s possible to take an image that’s bright and full of colour with interesting shapes just looking at the water. It’s not only full sun, not too high in the sky, but little wind, a small amount of ripple, enough water, no algae in the water or debris on the surface, no obstructions, etc, etc. It would be easy to forget to mention that you also need a good subject boat. In this case, the fishing boat Jacoba alongside at Newlyn harbour was perfect.

The expanse of rich colours of the hull and the more delicate lines and contrast of the white railings make this a dramatic scene.
