Most fishing trawlers are red or blue or, sometimes, orange. There are obviously exceptions but that’s the norm. Their reflections are gorgeous and rich and I will never tire of photographing them but when I saw a brilliant flash of golden yellow dancing in the sunshine of Newlyn harbour it just made me smile.
This joyous yellow was beautifully set against bright white and deep black, creating a dramatic field of swirls and loops. If you look closely even the light areas are in fact made up of intricate patterns.
Over the years I’ve found that photographs of reflections are best when the water is clear and cold. This shot was taken in mid-January and it lifted the spirits and warmed the heart, even if everything else was rather chilly!
The first of the limited edition of 5 of this image was printed quite big (90cm x 60cm) on glossy aluminium and framed in white tulipwood to create a stunning piece of art in a beautifully refurbished flat overlooking a different harbour.
