This rock stopped me in my tracks whilst walking along the shore on The Lizard peninsula in south west Cornwall. It had so many fabulous colours and layers, like peeling paint or crumbling old plaster on a wall.
Just a couple of weeks before, the news had been full of an exciting discovery of new breathtaking frescoes unearthed in Pompeii. The paintings in the ancient city were found on walls in a modest home and had caused a lot of excitement. I felt this rock was revealing its own abstract beauty and I was keen to take some photographs before the tide came up the beach and cut me off.
I will return some time to see how the eroding layers have impacted the rock mural and what other colours have been brought into the light, creating a different image.
A square crop of “Rock Mural” was pre-selected for the 171st Open Exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy in 2024.
