Looking at Rock, Seeing the Sea

There’s a rocky outcrop on the South West Coast Path, just north of Kynance Cove on The Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, that has some gorgeous details if you just stop and look. It’s a place where I’ve had many picnic lunches and spotted some beautiful nature over the years such as Clouded Yellow, Dark Green Fritillary and Grayling butterflies as well as plants like Green-winged Orchid and Autumn Lady’s-tresses, a small, delicate, pale orchid.

I think looking for insects and plants helps me notice the geology. There’s a lot of grey rock and small stones and grit amongst the short grass but then this beautiful green slab. It would be easy to miss, it’s less than 5cm across with deep, dark fractures running across the surface, but look closely and the different green-blue hues are wonderful and the various lichens just add to the texture and interest, especially the dots of pure gold.

It was late afternoon and the rock wasn’t in direct sunlight so you could really see the rich colours. I filled the frame with the details and took the photograph. When I saw it on my computer screen the title came to me straight away…”Looking at Rock, Seeing the Sea”. It wasn’t just the rhythms of the greens and blues but the highlights of white like breaking waves and the dark shadows like rocks appearing out of the water.

The first edition I did was printed on ultra thin aluminium sized at 48cm x 36cm and framed in white tulip wood. It was exhibited and sold by the Penwith Gallery in St Ives. The second edition was a square crop 50cm x 50cm, also on aluminium and framed in white tulip wood, and this one was sold directly to a private collector.

Do contact me if you are interested in purchasing one of the three remaining editions or if you would like any more information about this image.
